Signs your builder books are wrong

If you see these, the numbers are not telling you the truth.

Short answer: Your builder books are probably wrong if margin surprises you at closing, job cost does not exist by house, deposits or loan draws show up as income, accounts are months behind on reconciliation, project software and QuickBooks disagree, or your CPA has to rebuild costs at year end. Each one hides how a house is really doing.

The warning signs

  • A house closes with less margin than you expected
  • No budget vs actual by house
  • Deposits or draws recorded as income
  • Large uncategorized or "Ask my accountant" balances
  • Buildertrend or JobTread job cost does not match QuickBooks
  • Bank or card accounts not reconciled for months
  • Your CPA rebuilds job costs at year end

What to do

Start with a review of 2 or 3 recent houses. Our $750 Job Cost Checkup does that and gives you written findings and a fixed quote.

Common questions

Is it expensive to fix?

It depends how far back it goes. We quote cleanup per month of history after the Checkup.

Can I fix it myself?

Yes, with the steps in our guides. Many builders prefer to hand it off.

How fast can you start?

We reply to introductions within 1 business day.
